Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the abnormal perception of sound.  Most commonly it is associated with high frequency sensory neural hearing loss.  It can also be part of the presentation of Meniere’s disease.  High doses of certain medications such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medications as well as certain diuretics can also cause tinnitus.

Unless a specific cause can be, identified the treatment of tinnitus is often difficult and unsatisfactory.  Some helpful coping strategies can be found on the website of the American Tinnitus Association and the groups listed below.

Northern Virginia Tinnitus Support Group
A self-help group that offers people the opportunity to meet with others facing a common problem and to share their experiences, knowledge, strengths, and hope.  Please be aware from the start that the expected outcome is not a cure for tinnitus but for the development of coping strategies.

Please contact one of the following for additional information:
Howard Bernett at 703-610-1825 or hbernett@mitretek.org
