How long is the surgical procedure and will I need to stay overnight in the hospital?  
The procedure takes from 1 1/2 - 3 hours depending if it is a total or partial thyroidectomy.  One overnight stay in the hospital is necessary.

Will I have a drain? 
Not always but if one is required it will be in for 2-3 days. 

Will I be on Synthroid for the remainder of my life?   
If a total thyroidectomy - yes.  In some cases of partial thyroidectomies the medication is needed.

How long until I can return to work?  
We recommend taking 1 week off of work.

Can I drive right away?   
We recommend you refrain from driving for 2-3 days.

 

Post Operative Instructions

For one week after surgery, please do not lift anything over 10 pounds.

Keep clean - you may take a shower - be sure to pat dry.

The sutures will be removed in about 10 days.
