Thyroidectomy in Alexandria

Thyroid gland removal is surgery to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. Your thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland that lies over your trachea (the tube that carries air to your lungs). It is just below your voice box.

  • Total thyroidectomy removes the entire gland.
  • Subtotal or partial thyroidectomy removes part of the thyroid gland.

The thyroid gland is part of the endocrine system. It helps your body regulate your metabolism.

How long is the surgical procedure and will I need to stay overnight in the hospital?

The procedure takes from 1 1/2 – 3 hours depending if it is a total or partial thyroidectomy. One overnight stay in the hospital is necessary.

Will I have a drain?

Not always but if one is required it will be in for 2-3 days.

Will I be on Synthroid for the remainder of my life?

If a total thyroidectomy – yes. In some cases of partial thyroidectomies the medication is needed.

How long until I can return to work?

We recommend taking 1 week off of work.

Can I drive right away?

We recommend you refrain from driving for 2-3 days.

Post Operative Instructions

  1. For one week after surgery, please do not lift anything over 10 pounds.
  2. Keep clean – you may take a shower – be sure to pat dry.
  3. The sutures will be removed in about 10 days.
